  • Material: A rotten egg or several skunk cabbage leaves
  • Name: Stinking Cloud
  • Range: 90 feet
  • School: Conjuration
  • Target: A 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point within range

You create a 20-foot-radius sphere of yellow, nauseating gas centered on a point within range. The cloud spreads around corners, and its area is heavily obscured. The cloud lingers in the air for the duration.

Each creature that is completely within the cloud at the start of its turn must make a Constitution saving throw against poison. On a failed save, the creature spends its action that turn retching and reeling. Creatures that don't need to breathe or are immune to poison automatically succeed on this saving throw.

A moderate wind (at least 10 miles per hour) disperses the cloud after 4 rounds. A strong wind (at least 20 miles per hour) disperses it after 1 round.

The SendingStone review

Stinking Cloud is a third-level spell that creates a noxious cloud of gas that can incapacitate enemies within its area of effect. Despite its impressive crowd control potential, some critics argue that it falls short in higher level play when enemies may have access to stronger magic resistance and the cloud's potency is reduced. Additionally, the requirement for a material component, such as a rotten egg or skunk cabbage, can limit its usage and make it difficult to procure in certain environments. However, supporters of the spell appreciate its versatility and its ability to create difficult terrain that can impair enemies' movement. Ultimately, whether or not Stinking Cloud is a worthwhile spell depends on the individual playstyle and situation.

Stinking Cloud is D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) 5th edition content, but other TTRPGs may have their own version such as a Stinking Cloud Pathfinder edition. Want to use Stinking Cloud in a VTT (virtual tabletop)? Try out SendingStone for free today!
