Lightning springs from your hand to deliver a shock to a creature you try to touch. Make a melee spell attack against the target. You have advantage on the attack roll if the target is wearing armor made of metal. On a hit, the target takes 1d8 lightning damage, and it can't take reactions until the start of its next turn.
The spell's damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).
Shocking Grasp is a popular spell in Dungeons & Dragons that deals 1d8 lightning damage and is available to sorcerers and wizards from level 1. It has a casting time of 1 action and no range limit, as it requires the caster to touch their target. It's often used as a reliable melee option for magic-users, especially against enemies with low AC. However, it becomes less effective against enemies with resistance or immunity to lightning damage, as well as those who are more difficult to touch. Some players may prefer other cantrips with higher damage output or additional effects, but Shocking Grasp remains a solid choice for those who want a safe option for close combat.
Shocking Grasp is D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) 5th edition content, but other TTRPGs may have their own version such as a Shocking Grasp Pathfinder edition. Want to use Shocking Grasp in a VTT (virtual tabletop)? Try out SendingStone for free today!
