Antimagic Susceptibility: The rug is incapacitated while in the area of an antimagic field. If targeted by dispel magic, the rug must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against the caster's spell save DC or fall unconscious for 1 minute.
Damage Transfer: While it is grappling a creature, the rug takes only half the damage dealt to it, and the creature grappled by the rug takes the other half.
False Appearance: While the rug remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a normal rug.
Smother: Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one Medium or smaller creature. Hit: The creature is grappled (escape DC 13). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, blinded, and at risk of suffocating, and the rug can't smother another target. In addition, at the start of each of the target's turns, the target takes 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage.
The Rug of Smothering is an interesting and unique creature in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Despite its seemingly harmless appearance, it poses a moderate challenge to adventurers with its AC of 12. It lacks any particular alignment and has a rather low Charisma score of 1. In terms of its physical abilities, the Rug of Smothering has average Constitution of 10 and dexterity of 14, making it somewhat nimble. It is immune to a variety of debilitating conditions like being blinded, charmed, deafened, frightened, paralyzed, petrified, and poisoned.
With a Challenge Rating of 2, this creature is not to be underestimated. Though it may seem like a simple rug, it has the ability to smother and suffocate its victims. This makes it a challenging opponent in combat encounters, especially when multiple adventurers are targeted at once. It relies on its dexterity to stay elusive and avoid attacks, making it more resilient than one might initially expect. Furthermore, it has the unique ability to restrain its prey, making it difficult for them to fight back or escape.
In conclusion, the Rug of Smothering is an intriguing addition to any Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Its seemingly harmless appearance, combined with its ability to smother and restrain adventurers, makes it a formidable opponent. Its immunity to various conditions further enhances its resilience in combat. Despite its low Charisma score, the Rug of Smothering proves to be a challenge for adventurers with its moderate Challenge Rating of 2. So, adventurers should approach it with caution and come prepared for a challenging encounter.
