You create a 10-foot-radius, 20-foot-tall cylinder of magical energy centered on a point on the ground that you can see within range. Glowing runes appear wherever the cylinder intersects with the floor or other surface.
Choose one or more of the following types of creatures - celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, or undead. The circle affects a creature of the chosen type in the following ways.
• The creature can't willingly enter the cylinder by nonmagical means. If the creature tries to use teleportation or interplanar travel to do so, it must first succeed on a Charisma saving throw.
• The creature has disadvantage on attack rolls against targets within the cylinder.
• Targets within the cylinder can't be charmed, frightened, or possessed by the creature.
When you cast this spell, you can elect to cause its magic to operate in the reverse direction, preventing a creature of the specified type from leaving the cylinder and protecting targets outside it.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the duration increases by 1 hour for each slot level above 3rd.
The spell Magic Circle is a useful tool for the protection of oneself or allies from evil or otherworldly beings. Its casting time can take a minute, which may not be feasible in the heat of battle. However, its one hour duration can provide ample time for protection. It is available to a range of spellcasting classes, including Clerics, Paladins, Warlocks, and Wizards. Its various components make it harder to cast, but ultimately add to its effectiveness.
When cast at a higher level, its protection can be extended to even more powerful beings, adding additional layers of defense against forces that would do harm. The ability to customize the spell's protection to the particular dangers one faces is also quite valuable. The downside is that the spell's components, which can include holy water, powdered silver or iron, and precious gems, can be quite expensive.
While Magic Circle may not be suitable for every situation or campaign, it provides an excellent defense mechanism for those facing otherworldly or evil beings. Despite its high costs, for those who can afford it, it is an essential tool to have in their magical arsenal.
Magic Circle is D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) 5th edition content, but other TTRPGs may have their own version such as a Magic Circle Pathfinder edition. Want to use Magic Circle in a VTT (virtual tabletop)? Try out SendingStone for free today!
