You attempt to interrupt a creature in the process of casting a spell. If the creature is casting a spell of 3rd level or lower, its spell fails and has no effect. If it is casting a spell of 4th level or higher, make an ability check using your spellcasting ability. The DC equals 10 + the spell's level. On a success, the creature's spell fails and has no effect.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the interrupted spell has no effect if its level is less than or equal to the level of the spell slot you used.
Counterspell is a powerful spell that allows a caster to interrupt and cancel out an opposing spellcaster's actions. It's a highly desirable spell for any wizard, sorcerer, or warlock who finds themselves in combat situations. However, some argue that it can be too powerful, leading to an overreliance on stopping spells rather than diversifying one's strategy. Additionally, some DMs may rule that counterspelling is not always an option, as it can disrupt the narrative flow of a game. Despite these criticisms, Counterspell remains a popular and effective spell in the arsenal of spellcasters in Dungeons and Dragons.
Counterspell is D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) 5th edition content, but other TTRPGs may have their own version such as a Counterspell Pathfinder edition. Want to use Counterspell in a VTT (virtual tabletop)? Try out SendingStone for free today!
