Creatures of your choice that you can see within range and that can hear you must make a Wisdom saving throw. A target automatically succeeds on this saving throw if it can't be charmed. On a failed save, a target is affected by this spell. Until the spell ends, you can use a bonus action on each of your turns to designate a direction that is horizontal to you. Each affected target must use as much of its movement as possible to move in that direction on its next turn. It can take its action before it moves. After moving in this way, it can make another Wisdom saving to try to end the effect. A target isn't compelled to move into an obviously deadly hazard, such as a fire or pit, but it will provoke opportunity attacks to move in the designated direction.
The spell Compulsion is a powerful enchantment spell available to Bards that allows them to control the actions of others. With a range of 30 feet and a duration of up to 1 minute, this spell can be a game-changer in combat situations. However, its effectiveness depends on the target's wisdom saving throw, which can limit its usefulness against higher-level enemies.
While the spell does require concentration, its ability to compel creatures to move in a designated direction can be incredibly useful for crowd control or tactical positioning. It can force enemies to move away from allies, protecting them from harm, or force them into a trap or hazard. This makes Compulsion a versatile spell that can be used creatively in many different scenarios.
On the downside, the spell's effectiveness diminishes against creatures with high wisdom saving throws, as they have a better chance of resisting the compulsion. Additionally, the fact that it is only available to Bards limits its accessibility to other spellcasting classes.
Overall, Compulsion can be a valuable tool in a Bard's arsenal, allowing them to exert control over the battlefield and influence the actions of their enemies. However, its limitations and reliance on the target's saving throw make it less reliable against certain opponents.
Compulsion is D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) 5th edition content, but other TTRPGs may have their own version such as a Compulsion Pathfinder edition. Want to use Compulsion in a VTT (virtual tabletop)? Try out SendingStone for free today!
