For the duration, you understand the literal meaning of any spoken language that you hear. You also understand any written language that you see, but you must be touching the surface on which the words are written. It takes about 1 minute to read one page of text.
This spell doesn’t decode secret messages in a text or a glyph, such as an arcane sigil, that isn’t part of a written language.
Comprehend Languages is a useful spell for any adventurer who wants to understand written or spoken languages they might not otherwise know. It has a short casting time of only one action and a duration of one hour, which can be quite handy in certain situations. The spell is available to Bards, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards, which means it has a broad range of applications. The only material component required is a pinch of soot and salt, which is easy enough to acquire. While it may not be an essential spell for every campaign, Comprehend Languages is certainly a spell that every adventurer should consider adding to their spellbook.
Comprehend Languages is D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) 5th edition content, but other TTRPGs may have their own version such as a Comprehend Languages Pathfinder edition. Want to use Comprehend Languages in a VTT (virtual tabletop)? Try out SendingStone for free today!
